Next, realize your completed notation score with EastWest instruments in a ‘3-Step’ process as demonstrated in class and lab and outlined below.
A. First, create a folder labeled Scoring Project3_EastWest_YourName.
B. Step 1: Melodic Elements
1. Export the MIDI data from your completed Finale or Sibelius score, import it into Logic Pro and save that file as ‘Menotti1’ or ‘YourChoice1’ in the folder you just created.
2. Open the Play interface for each track, assign the appropriate key switch instrument from the East West Symphonic Orchestra (not Hollywood). Select and turn on the ‘Stage Mic’ for each instrument that you have loaded and adjust its level.
3. Next, using ‘automation data,’ MUTE the portions of each track that do not have melodic elements, so that you only hear the melodic elements. Now, assign appropriate articulations from each key switch instrument that represent your notated score. At a minimum, you will need 2 or 3 articulations per track.
4. Next, adjust the overall volume – CC7 – of each track. Then, use CC11 – Expression – for additional changes in volume so that you can hear each instrument clearly. Then, save your ‘Menotti1’ or ‘YourChoice1’ file in your Scoring Project3_EastWest_YourName folder.
C. Step 2: Middleground/Background Elements
1. Now, make a copy of Menotti1 or ‘YourChoice1’ and label the copy Menotti2 or ‘YourChoice2’. Continue working with this new #2 version.
2. Next, using ‘automation data,’ MUTE all of the melody segments and UNMUTE all of the middleground/background segments.
3. Now, assign additional articulations from each key switch instrument as needed for the middleground/background segments. This will increase the number of articulations per track to at least 3 or 4.
4. Finally, adjust CC7 – Overall Volume – of the middleground/background segments of each track. Then, use CC11 – Expression – for additional changes in volume so that you can hear each instrument clearly. Then, save your ‘Menotti2’ or ‘YourChoice2’ file in your Scoring Project3_EastWest_YourName folder as well.
D. Step 3: Final Mix
1. Now, make a copy of Menotti2 or ‘YourChoice2’ and label the copy Menotti3 or ‘YourChoice3’. Continue working with this new #3 version.
2. Next, delete the remaining MUTE ‘automation data,’ so that all segments of every track are UNMUTED.
3. Now, re-adjust any articulations on any track as needed so that all elements are heard clearly.
4. Next, re-adjust any CC7 – Overall Volume – or CC11 – Expression – so that you can hear each instrument clearly.
5. Now, add convolution reverb from EastWest’s ‘EW Spaces II’ plug-ins. The most efficient way to do this is to create Busses 1-3 – digital processing channel strips – Bus 1 for the woodwinds, Bus 2 for the strings, and Bus 3 for the remaining instruments. Try using the Abravanel Hall presets.
6. Finally, save your ‘Menotti3’ or ‘YourChoice3’ file in your Scoring Project3_EastWest_YourName folder as well.
E. When you are finished, be sure that all three of your EastWest realizations versions are in your Scoring Project3_EastWest_YourName folder. Compress that folder as a zip file and upload it at your Scoring Project #3 – EastWest assignment page (at Canvas) labeled ScoringProject3_EastWest_YourName.zip
